Family Law Bar Association
Family Law Bar Association, how a referral of a referral led to a brand new identity
Our introduction to the Family Law Bar Association (FLBA) came in a slightly roundabout way. We’d been talking to St Ives Chambers about their brand and website, and they’d come to us by referral from a long-time client. Enter Matthew Maynard, who’s a member of both St Ives and the FLBA. He was looking for someone to help with the FLBA website, and St Ives passed him our way.
So technically, FLBA came to us through a referral from a referral. It meant someone had not only remembered us but thought highly enough to pass the recommendation on, twice. That’s a lovely compliment.
But the loop didn’t end there. Impressed by our work and our overall agreeableness, Matthew went on to recommend us so strongly to St Ives that we won their project too. It’s referrals squared, if you like. Proof that good work has a way of coming back around.
A refreshed identity to balance authority with modernity
The refreshed identity for FLBA was designed to strike a careful balance between authority, heritage and modernity. For the logo we created the shield motif, as it’s a symbol of protection. The shield alludes to the relationship between parent and child, reflecting the association’s family focus. It conveys stability, trust and structure, anchoring the brand in values that members and clients immediately recognise.
That sense of heritage is complemented by a bold, authoritative presence that feels both established and reliable. The new standalone icon works seamlessly across platforms, lending the brand institutional credibility while remaining flexible for modern use. We modernised their green palette, it retains gravitas but feels fresher and less stuffy. The overall effect is a confident, contemporary identity that communicates trust while translating effortlessly into digital environments.
Project deliverables
From an abandoned site to a digital hub for members
FLBA’s old website was built more than a decade ago. Outdated, hard to edit, and rarely maintained, it had become all but abandoned by members. Images were years out of date, even showing barristers who had since become judges, and the content had become disjointed over time.
This gave us the chance to start afresh. Working with Matthew in an online discovery session, we mapped out what the association really needed. A high-performance WordPress site built on our own in-house software, with the flexibility to expand in future. We designed a bespoke page builder (top-tip: never use an off-the-shelf plugin), migrated their news and publications, and added new sections to show resources more clearly.
The biggest upgrade was digitalising membership. We integrated a system to handle card payments in place of standing orders and imported their full membership list from the CRM. The result is an automated subscription e-commerce solution developed to reduce admin. Building on this, we added a booking system for FLBA’s annual events, giving logged-in members a straightforward way to reserve their place.
Together, these features transform the site into a modern hub. One that feels authoritative, is easy to maintain, and makes life simpler for both administrators and members. And, most importantly of all, FLBA members have flocked back to their online home.

"We have been absolutely thrilled with Plott's vision and friendly professionalism. From my first contact with them, through to their continued support now the site is up and running, they have been responsive and helpful at every turn. Nothing is too much trouble for them. I would give them six stars if Google would let me."
