The biggest brand and website mistakes we see

Your brand and website should be considered valuable assets, not costs. Because when they’re done well, they increase what your business is worth.

Plutus and Clements and Church are good examples of what we mean when we say, ‘brand and website done well.’

As Bart Dalton of Rockfine puts it in, ‘Your investment returns don’t differentiate you anymore… Building a brand that makes you irreplaceable? That’s where the money is.’

For advice firms thinking ahead — whether it’s scaling, succession, or sale — brand plays a bigger role than many realise. Read Bart’s full guest post.

That’s why we work with financial planners and advisers to build brands (and websites) that do more than look nice, they add real commercial value.

We’ve spent over 15 years helping financial firms turn their brand and website into assets that build trust, strengthens client loyalty, and adds measurable value.

So if you feel like you’re not getting a return on investment, it might not be your imagination. It might be one of these mistakes.

So here are the biggest mistakes we see (and how to fix them).

1. Talking about yourself, not your clients

You’re not the hero.

The easiest trap of all. You sit down to write about your firm and before you know it, you’ve filled a page with “we this” and “we that.”

The problem? Your clients aren’t interested in your story until they see how it connects to theirs. They want to see themselves reflected back — their problems, their goals, their worries.

You don’t need to be the hero. They are. Your role is the guide. Show how you solve their problems. Lead with empathy before expertise, that’s what builds credibility.

Our tip: Think about the things keeping your clients up at night. Ask them if you’re not sure, they’ll tell you. Then show how your service solves that problem.

2. Overcomplicating the message

Clarity is king.

It’s tempting to explain everything in detail. But if people can’t understand you quickly, they’ll switch off. Avoid jargon. Speak like a human. And connect emotionally, because what people really want to know is ‘am I going to be okay?’

Tell stories and focus on the outcomes, not the products. People don’t buy investment performance. They buy peace of mind.

Our tip: Clear communication isn’t “dumbing down.” It’s smartening up for both clients and search engines. The simpler your message, the further it travels.

3. Faking it

Keep it real.

Clients can tell when you’re insincere. So avoid cliché stock photos and vague promises. Build trust by showing the real you. Use real photography of your team. Use language that sounds like you, not like everyone else. Live your values, don’t just list them.

Once you’ve nailed it, be consistent across your website, socials, client communication and emails.

Our tip: Most firms use nouns as values — honesty, integrity, clarity. Instead, turn them into verbs. Don’t say integrity, say ‘we’ll always treat you fairly and respectfully’.

4. Shoehorning into templates

Bespoke is better.

Your website shouldn’t dictate your brand, but templates have a way of doing just that. They force you into a mould that wasn’t made for you.

The result is a site that looks like everyone else’s. Safe, cheap, generic. Forgettable.

Have your website built around your brand. Make it simple to navigate, easy to update, and unmistakably yours. It’ll build trust from the first impression, and you’ll be more likely to keep it updated.

Because let’s be honest, an out-of-date site doesn’t just look tired, it sends the wrong message.

Our tip: Treat your website as an extension of your brand, not an add-on.

5. Neglecting first impressions

No second chances.

Your website is where most people meet your business. If it looks dated, broken, or confusing, they’ll assume the same about your firm.

94% of first impressions are design-related.
75% of people judge your credibility based on your website’s design.

First impressions matter. A site that feels modern, clear, and easy to use sets the right tone. It says, ‘this is a firm you can trust’.

And it’s not just your website. The same goes for brochures, social posts, emails — even how you answer the phone. It’s all branding. It all matters.

Our tip: Get the most from your website by thinking in five-year cycles. Refreshing every few years keeps your first impression working for you.

Your investment returns don’t differentiate you anymore… Building a brand that makes you irreplaceable? That’s where the money is.

Avoiding the mistakes

None of this is complicated — but it takes discipline.

  • Put your clients at the centre of the story.
  • Keep your message clear and human.
  • Be authentic and consistent.
  • Build your site around your brand, not the other way round.
  • Make sure your first impression is a good one.

Do it right, and your brand and website aren’t costs. They’re powerful assets that add value to your business.
